それでは ここで 一方で殺戮をいさぎよしとはせず しかもその反面で戦争にのめりこんで行こうとするこのテオドリックの動きに われわれは どんな像をかたちづくろうとするか。
人が 互いに矛盾する両方向のなんらかの性格をそのうちに持っていることは 当然であると指摘するのも ただ心理の世界にのみ通用する考えである。ここでは 《〈殺す〉のをためらう》テオドリックが 《〈殺す〉のをためらわない》ことによって 自身が生きる道を選んだという一つの世界であり そこでは 単なる納得だけでは すまされないものが見出されなければならない。もちろん殺す・殺さないという事に関して もし社会に時代的な進歩があるとするなら 現代においては その進歩にもとづくというような形で 時代の制約をもっているということは 言うまでもないのであるが。
この非連続性は 連続性をまったくは 取り消してしまうものではないと見る観点に立っての議論を促す。これは 時代の進歩――問題解決の一般的な展開過程――の問題であると考えてよいであろう。
